diy tomato soup that warms your belly

Hello, It's been too long. Slap my wrist and call me a busy mom. Life has a way of keeping us busy doesn't it? In trying to stay warm this winter, I tried, for the first time to make my own tomato soup. I found this recipe in my February issue of Chatelaine magazine. Here is the process: butter, onion and garlic cooked until soft organic, Ontario tomatoes Other than my parents' canned tomatoes, this would be the next best thing. In our case, my kids are not keen on a strong red pepper taste so I used a small red pepper and more carrot. Left over broth is usually good in the fridge for 7 days. I just grab a marker and mark my new best before date on the top. I own a stick blender so I could puree my mixture right in the pot instead of transferring to another appliance, which makes this soup even easier to make. I really, really like this soup. The recipe calls for 1/8 of a teaspoon of cayenne

Warm up with encaustic painting

I am jumping out of my wintery, felt-lined boots with excitement! I have signed up to take a encaustic painting class at the end of January with Jan Yates. It has been a couple years since my last encaustic classes so I am really looking forward to painting with this medium again. Here is a sample of one of my pieces which I display on a shelf in my living room. In this piece I used tissue paper, buttons, oil sticks and wire. There are approximately 7 or 8 layers of wax in this particular piece. Jan Yates is a plein air artist, inspired by Canada's own Emily Carr. She sets up her easle, paints and canvas outside (in all weather) and paints what she sees at that particular moment in time. Daylight or lack of, changes the look of the landscape which changes the mood and feel of the painting. Check out her blog at www.janyates.blogspot.com

Eyes - the window to our soul

Here it is. My very first attempt at taking a self portrait. I find self portraits very challenging. I don't want to make a funny, scrunched up face while I'm looking into the camera. I certainly want the photo to be somewhat flattering. Here, I caught my reflection in our garage door window. What makes this extra great for me is I can't see my camera. It looks like I'm holding a window up to my eye. How does that saying go? ...the eyes are the window to your soul.
